Even though it is no longer a novelty, the spectacle of dawn experienced on the Dolomites continues to enjoy extraordinary success. This morning, Saturday, July 20th, bright and early at 6:00 a.m., thousands of people came up to the summit of Col Margherita, at 2500 metres, riding the cable lift from Passo San Pellegrino. With its location spanning between the Val di Fassa in Trentino and the province of Belluno, this place forms a natural scenic terrace of awesome beauty facing the Dolomites. It is one of the most amazing scenic points of the Falcade and Passo San Pellegrino resort areas.
This is not your ordinary sunrise…the event called Dawn on the Dolomites While Music Plays – “L’Alba delle Dolomiti e intanto si suona” – is in fact a concert show inspired by wartime diaries, part of the series called Sounds of the Dolomites – “I Suoni delle Dolomiti”, inspired by an idea from Mario Brunello and Alessandro Baricco. It’s a choral and orchestral ensemble that tells the story of a century-long journey, pondering war and humanity. The show is centred around music, war, peace, silence and the lesser and greater forms of resistance against brutality. And again, defeat and renewal. A journey from the Twentieth Century until today, through words from a diary by a soldier named Alessandro Silvestri. For him, music was a life line in the barbarity of the war, and here it has become an opportunity to move through words and sounds to a place where the Word War is not just a mere memory, but still a dramatic reality. On the “high altitude” stage of the Col Margherita, noted musicians and the actor Neri Marcorè put on a show. For this project, Giovanni Sollima composed a piece called “Diaspora”. Today this place was the majestic stage for this emotional concert-show, yet one hundred years ago it was also the theatre where thousands of soldiers fought bloody battles among fortifications and trenches during World War One.
It is a simple event that makes a strong impact, and it has enjoyed fantastic success. It is an entirely unique way to appreciate the singular beauty, colours, sounds and even silences of the mountains as a new day begins.
